Beck released his fifth studio effort “Odelay” on June 18, 1996. The album followed his 1994 offering “One Foot in the Grave” and includes his classic tracks “Where It’s At,” “Devil’s Haircut,” and “New Pollution.”

The album originally started with a mellow acoustic feel and included contributions from producers Tom Rothrock and Rob Schnapf. Beck later opted to change course and connect with the Dust Brothers, who helped pen “Where It’s At,” among other tracks on the album.

Beck explained that track’s origin while speaking with Rolling Stone:

“I came up with that little riff on the Wurlitzer organ, and said I gotta remember this. (The producers) The Dust Brothers were like-minded. We were drawn to the way drums had been recorded in the Sixties and early Seventies: sort of a heavy, dry, thick, soulful sound,” he said.
