The Beastie Boys hit the top of the Billboard 200 chart with their fifth studio album “Ill Communication” on June 18, 1994. The album was released on May 24, and its success was fueled largely by their signature hit “Sabotage.”

“Ill Communication” grabbed the top spot from Ace of Base’s hit album “The Sign.” The album held on at number one for a week before it was overtaken by “Purple” from Stone Temple Pilots.

Along with the chart-topping album, the Beasties had a successful chart run with “Sabotage,” which broke the top 20 on the Modern Rock charts. In an interview for their “The Sounds of Science” box set, group member Adam Horovitz says the track came together as an afterthought.

“We knew it should have vocals so after a few ideas and things, two weeks before we handed in the record, I went to [producer Mario Caldato Jr.’s] house and did the vocals on his 8-track,” he recalls.
