Elvis Presley gave his final live performance at the Market Square Arena in Indianapolis, Indiana on June 26, 1977. The show was one of many booked for Presley, who was gearing up for a full-scale tour the following August, the month of his death. According to “Elvis Presley, Reluctant Rebel: His Life and Our Times” by Glen Jeansonne, the King appeared to be returning to his old form after several years of declining health and poor performances. He had recently played in Memphis, where various members of the local music community, known as the Memphis Mafia, became convinced he was ready for a strong comeback. In the last few months of his life, Elvis reportedly found restored vigor and was on a new health regimen that included exercise and prolonged fasts. He was, however, still using a heavy mix of painkillers and sedatives that ultimately cost him his life.
