1992 - James Hetfield Burned By Pyrotechnics At Metallica/GNR Show

Metallica’s James Hetfield suffered near-deadly third degree burns while on stage at the Olympic Stadium in Montreal, Canada on August 8, 1992. The band was touring with Guns N’ Roses and Hetfield had misunderstood news about last minute changes to their pyrotechnics display. He was briefly engulfed in a 3,200 degree flame.

He was rushed immediately to an area hospital where he underwent treatment for severe second degree burns to his arms and shoulders. Speaking with People after the incident he explained:

"I was in shock," he said. "The nerves [in my arms] felt like they were exposed. My hand looked the worst. It bubbled up in two layers that came off."

Metallica ended their set immediately after the incident and, after waiting four hours, Guns N’ Roses hit the stage only to cut the set short after three songs. Fans at the show burst into a riot.
