U2 reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 with "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" on August 8, 1987.

The track was featured on the band's breakout album "The Joshua Tree," their fifth studio effort. U2 had scored their first number one single earlier in the year, when "With Or Without You" topped the charts in May.

Written by the band, with lyrics from frontman Bono, the song originated in a jam session and was built around a drum part provided by drummer Larry Mullen Jr. The track was produced by Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois.

"I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," which reached the top spot on guitarist the Edge's 26th birthday, took over number one from Bob Seger's "Shakedown." It would hold on for two weeks before being replaced by Madonna's "Who's That Girl."
