Billy Joel released his ninth studio album “An Innocent Man” on August 8, 1983. The album followed his 1982 release “The Nylon Curtain” and includes the hit singles “Tell Her About It,” “For The Longest Time,” “Uptown Girl,” and “Keeping the Faith” in addition to the title track.

The album topped the charts in New Zealand and peaked at number four on the Billboard 200 chart. Though it never hit number one, the album remained on the 200 chart for 111 weeks, becoming Billy’s longest-charting album.

The album’s title track was inspired by the work of the legendary songwriting team of Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller. Speaking of the album in the book “1000 UK #1 Hits,” Billy explained: "Usually I agonize over every note, but this time the songs came pouring out of me."
