Aerosmith released their ninth studio album, “Permanent Vacation,” on August 18, 1987. The album was Aerosmith’s first effort that was promoted heavily on MTV and also marked their first release with songs written by outside songwriters.

“Permanent Vacation” includes several of the band’s biggest tracks including “Dude (Looks Like a Lady),” “Angel” and “Rag Doll.” The band was at a critical point in their career and knew they needed a hit album to stay relevant. To help make the push, the band collectively quit using drugs and enlisted producer Bruce Fairburn.

“A lot of it was painful, because we gave up some control big time. The days when Jack Douglas let us experiment were over. We made the decision that we wanted to come back, reestablish ourselves and that ended up taking priority. That’s how we made the album that saved our career,” Tom Hamilton says in the band’s autobiography “Walk This Way.”
