Chic grabbed the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with “Good Times” on August 18, 1979. The track was originally released as part of the disco icons’ third studio album “Risqué” and also scored the number one position on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. When “Good Times” hit number one, it succeeded Donna Summer’s hit track “Bad Girls.” Chic held on for one week at the top with “Good Times” before they were succeeded by the Knack’s late-70s anthem “My Sharona.” The track was Chic’s second number one hit in 1979, following their signature track “Le Freak.” “Good Times” also found a second life as the main sample in the Sugar Hill Gang’s historic rap track “Rapper’s Delight.”“We were trying to build a bridge between the ghetto and pop music,” guitarist Nile Rodgers told Vibe magazine in 1997. “An R&B dance band with a jazzy rock vibe.”
