Nirvana released their third and final studio album, “In Utero,” on September 13, 1993. The album followed the band’s breakout smash sophomore release “Nevermind” and included the singles “Heart-Shaped Box” and “All Apologies.”

The album hit number one on the Billboard 200 chart by October 9, 1993. When the trio hit number one, they claimed the top spot from “In Pieces” by Garth Brooks. The country star claimed the top spot back after one week.

Both “Heart-Shaped Box” and “All Apologies” broke the top five on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The former came as a struggle to the band, as chief songwriter Kurt Cobain was suffering from severe writer’s block during their sessions:

"During those practices, I was trying to wait for Krist and Dave to come up with something but it just turned into noise all the time,” he recalls in the book “Come as You Are: The Story of Nirvana” by Michael Azzerad.
