1961 - Beach Boys Lay Down ‘Surfin'’ For Hite Morgan

A pre-fame Beach Boys, known at that time as the Pendletones, recorded their hit “Surfin’” for the first time at Hite Morgan’s studio in Hollywood, California on September 15, 1961.

The band had auditioned for Hite and Dorinda Morgan a few days earlier, but failed to impress the producers. However, Dennis Wilson told them they were working on a song called “Surfin.’” Intrigued, the Morgans told the group to finish the song and come back and perform it for them. When they did, the Morgans declared it a smash. The band would record the song officially for release later that October and, once the single was pressed, found out their name had been changed to the Beach Boys, in order to fit with the image of the song.
