1996 - Soundgarden's ‘Down On The Upside’ Released

Soundgarden released their fifth studio effort “Down on the Upside” on May 21, 1996. The album was the first since their mega-smash 1994 effort “Superunknown,” which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart and spawned the band’s signature hit “Black Hole Sun.”

While “Down on the Upside” didn’t fully match the hit power of “Superunknown,” the track did reach number two on the Billboard 200 chart for the week of June 8, 1996. At the time, the album was narrowly held out of the top spot by the Fugees album “The Score” and later by Metallica’s “Load.”

The lead single from “Down on the Upside” was “Pretty Noose.” The track hit radio in March of 1996 and climbed to the number two spot on Billboard’s Modern Rock Songs chart. It also hit number 37 on the Hot 100.
