The Fugees hit the top of the Billboard 200 chart with their second studio release, “The Score,” on May 25, 1996. The album followed their 1994 debut “Blunted on Reality” and features the singles “Fu-Gee-La,” “Killing Me Softly,” “Ready Or Not” and “No Woman, No Cry.”When the album hit number one, it claimed the top spot from “Fairweather Johnson” by Hootie & the Blowfish. They held on through June 21 in the top spot before “Load” by Metallica moved into the number one position. The group’s cover of the Roberta Flack hit “Killing Me Softly” hit number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was written by the songwriting team of Charles Fox and Norman Gimbel, who refused the Fugees’ request to change some of the lyrics to reflect themes of inner city struggle.
