Mariah Carey hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with her single “I Don’t Wanna Cry” on May 25, 1991. The track was released off Mariah’s self-titled album and featured the B-side “You Need Me.”

When the track hit number one, it claimed the top spot from "I Like the Way (The Kissing Game)" by Hi-Five. She held on at number one through June 1, 1991 when "More Than Words" by Extreme grabbed the top spot.

The track was co-written by Mariah with Narada Michael Walden, who said the idea came to him in a burst of inspiration in the studio:

“I kind of pulled it down from the sky and started singing this thing to her and she got it,” he told Billboard.
