A serial killer is usually a person who murders three or more people for abnormal psychological gratification, with the murders taking place over more than a month and including a significant period of time between them.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation or FBI defines serial killing as "a series of two or more murders, committed as separate events, usually, but not always, by one offender acting alone.”

However, most agencies around the world have set a threshold of three murders to define the crimes as serial killing.

Serial killing is different from a crime of passion, where a person loses control and bursts into a rage due to hate or anger.

The fact that serial killers actually enjoy or get a thrill doing the crime is disturbing.

In fact, nothing strikes more terror in our heart than when we read a headline that says “Serial Killer on the Loose.”

While the usual motive for serial killing is psychological gratification, the motives of most serial killers can include seeking thrill or attention, or financial gain.

Most serial killings also include sexual contact with the hapless victim.

Usually, the murders are attempted in a similar fashion by the serial killers, while the victims too may have a similar appearance, gender or race.

The world has known several serial killers and the list of people who commit these heinous crimes is endless.
