Definition of Virus

The term “virus” has its origin in Latin, meaning poison.

Viruses don’t have a cellular structure and lack the ability to grow or reproduce on their own. They need a host cell of a living organism, say, bacteria, plant or animal to reproduce.

Most viruses are zoonotic, meaning they are spread to humans from animals. Ebola, Zika, MERS, SARS, and Nipah are some of the examples of recently emerging viral diseases caused by zoonotic viruses.

The virus that is making headlines this year is a new coronavirus temporarily named “2019-nCoV”, or commonly referred to as the Wuhan coronavirus.
