Bats are the main hosts of coronavirus and while within the host, the virus mutates and replicates and then leaps to other animals. These infected animals transmit the virus to humans.

There are seven strains of coronavirus namely 229E, NL63, OC43, HKU1, MERS-CoV, the coronavirus that causes Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, or MERS, SARS-CoV, the coronavirus that causes severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, and 2019-nCoV, the 2019 novel coronavirus.

Coronavirus affects the respiratory tract, and in humans, the symptoms can range from the mild common cold to more severe disease, which can be fatal.
