The Mall of America, built to be the largest enclosed retail complex in the U.S., opened on August 11, 1992, in Bloomington, Minnesota. Ray Charles was on hand for the event, which included 10,000 guests and an indoor fireworks display. The soul great performed "America the Beautiful." The tune, based on a patriotic poem and music originally written for a hymn, was included on Charles' 1972 album "A Message From The People" - an LP that featured cover art depicting Ray, four children of various ethnic backgrounds and the ghostly heads of assassinated American icons Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr. In his career, Charles would also perform "America the Beautiful" at a World Series game and at the Super Bowl.
