1990 - Pearl Jam Play First Concert

The band that would become known as Pearl Jam played their first gig on October 22, 1990. The future grunge legends were known at the time as Mookie Blaylock – naming themselves after an NBA All-Star that played from 1989-1992 (Blaylock's jersey number was 10, giving Pearl Jam the name of their first album).

The gig took place at the Off Ramp Cafe in Seattle, Washington, with a set list that included a number of songs that would become the band's early hits, like "Alive" and "Even Flow."

Frontman Eddie Vedder, who was living in Southern California, had been given a demo tape made by three Seattle musicians - Mike McCready, Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament. He added vocals to the music they had provided and sent the tape back. The Seattle crew was impressed, and Vedder flew in from San Diego in mid-October. After about a week of rehearsal, the new band played its debut concert at the Off Ramp.
