Phil Collins hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart with his cover of Toni Wine and Carol Bayer’s 1960’s classic “Groovy Kind of Love” on October 22, 1988. The song was originally recorded for the soundtrack to the 1988 film “Buster” starring Collins along with Julie Walters, Larry Lamb and Sheila Hancock. When Phil hit number one with “A Groovy Kind of Love” he bumped UB40’s “Red Red Wine” out of the top spot. The former Genesis member held on for one week at the top with the track before the Beach Boys took over in the top spot with "Kokomo" on October 20, 1988. While speaking about the track with Songfacts.com, Toni Wine revealed that the hit single developed quickly for them, noting, “We wrote it in 20 minutes. It was amazing. Just flew out of our mouths, and at the piano, it was a real quick and easy song to write.”
