Thursday, Credit Suisse initiated coverage of Mosaic Co. (MOS) stock with a Neutral rating and a price target of $53.

Analyst Yip noted that MOS's share appreciation in recent weeks in response to renewed M&A speculation has brought the stock price to levels that we believe offer limited upside potential. Meanwhile, the analyst believes that the long-term outlook for MOS's businesses is mixed.

The analyst said that Potash fundamentals are strong and the company's capital investments should allow it to capture share of the growth while the phosphate business will face intense competitive challenges over the next few years that are likely to negatively affect the company's returns.

The analyst added that MOS's operations have been positively transformed in recent years, driven by the restructuring of its underperforming phosphate business, growth investments in the fundamentally strong potash business, and its aggressive debt paydown. The company currently has a solid potash platform, with roughly half of its earnings tied to the potash market, and its leverage to the potash industry should increase owing to the company's planned capacity expansions.

The analyst is concerned about the midterm outlook for the phosphate business. Despite the company's success in improving its phosphate operations in recent years, the business may be challenged over the next few years by new competitive supply and this could hurt MOS's volumes and pricing. While its long-term potash fundamentals are strong, they may be offset by near-term downside risks to volumes and pricing.

Currently, MOS is up $0.29 or 0.54% and trading at $53.59.
