Navigant Consulting Q2 Profit Falls, Adj. EPS Tops Estimate; Revenues Up 11.5% - Update

Navigant Consulting, Inc. (NCI), a specialty consulting firm, Thursday reported a fall in earnings for the second quarter, despite increase in total revenues, hurt by higher costs and expenses. However, on an adjusted basis, earnings for the quarter topped analysts' expectation by 2 cents.

The Chicago, Illinois-based company's net income for the second quarter was $10.0 million, down from $11.4 million in the same quarter a year ago. However, earnings per share remained flat at $0.21.

Excluding office consolidation costs of $2.6 million and income tax expense of $1.0 million, adjusted net income for the recent quarter was $11.5 million or $0.24 per share. On average, ten analysts polled by First Call/Thomson Financial projected earnings of $0.22 per share.

Total revenues for the second quarter were $211.4 million, 11.5% higher than $189.6 million in the same quarter of the prior year. Nine analysts' consensus revenue estimation was $209.55 million.

Operating income for the second quarter was $22.9 million, up from $21.9 million in the comparable quarter of last year. On an adjusted basis, operating income for the recent quarter was $25.5 million.

General and administrative expenses grew to $41.1 million from $34.1 million in the same quarter a year ago. Depreciation expenses rose to $4.4 million from $4.0 million in the earlier year quarter.

For the six-month period, the company's net income fell to $20.9 million from $22.7 million in the prior year period. However, on a per share basis, earnings grew to $0.44 from $0.41 in last year period.

On an adjusted basis, net income was $23.3 million, marginally down from $23.4 million in the previous year period. Earnings per share, however, increased to $0.49 from $0.43 in the year-ago period.

Total revenues for the first six months improved to $418.5 million from $372.9 million in the same period of the preceding year.

Navigation Consulting's stock closed Thursday's regular trading session at $18.48, down 21 cents or 1.12%.
