Confidence of Italian manufacturers and service providers improved in August, but persisting weakness in demand dragged down retailers' sentiment, latest set of surveys by the economic think tank ISAE showed Tuesday.

Italian manufacturers confidence rose to 74.8 in August from a revised reading of 72.4 in July, while economists had forecast an increase to 73.

A gauge for the service sector climbed to minus 6 from minus 13. It is likely to turn to a positive reading in the coming months.

However, retailers' confidence indicator declined to 98.1 from downwardly revised 98.7 in July.
