Thirteen people were shot dead by Militants disguised as troops in a pre-dawn attack in a village south-west of Baghdad Monday.

The gunmen, dressed in Iraqi army uniforms, sprayed bullets from their car on homes in the village of Zaidan.

Police suspect the attack was the result of a tribal dispute.

A leading member of the Iraqi Islamist Party, members of a local Awakening Council - a Sunni militia, and their children were among those killed.

Five others were killed in two explosions elsewhere in the country, police in Baghdad said.

Despite a fall in violence in Iraq since last year, a number of recent blasts have raised fears that sustained violence could return to the country, especially after the US troop withdrawal from Iraqi cities and major towns in June.

Pentagon plans to end combat operations across Iraq by September next year, leaving the challenging task of maintaining the country's security to Iraqi forces.
