Paul McCartney is waging a campaign to eliminate meat from people's diets for at least one day a week. The former Beatle is pushing a "Meat-Free Monday" campaign, stressing the positive geo-climate implications of a collective effort to reduce meat consumption.

"The livestock industry produces more greenhouse gases than all forms of transport - cars, plane, trucking - put together," McCartney told the European Parliament this week at its Global Warming and Food Policy hearing.

"We thought cars were the villain . . . but it appears livestock produces more [greenhouse gas], not to mention deforestation for grazing, or for growing animal feed - one third of cereal crops are grown for animals."

McCartney's concept for winning vegetarians has the support of several noted stars including John Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, and Sheryl Crow.

Representatives of the livestock industry, such as the Irish Farmers' Association, have come out to oppose McCartney's campaign.
