Monday, Virgin Media (VMED,VMED.L) said it has named Andrew Barron as its chief operating officer, effective January 4, 2010. The company also announced the extension of contract of its chief commercial officer Mark Schweitzer.

The New York-based provider of residential broadband services in the United Kingdom said in his new role, Barron will oversee consumer operations and will retain responsibility for the customer experience function and the business division.

Andrew Barron, who joined Virgin Media in March 2008, led the company's strategy development and, more recently, overseen a comprehensive reorganization of the company's customer operations and network teams. He became the company's chief customer and operations officer in October 2008. Earlier, he was the company's managing director of strategy and corporate development from March 2008.

Before Barron joined Virgin Media, he served Modern Times Group MTG AB as chief operating officer from January 2003. He earlier served in senior divisional roles at MTG, United PanEurope Communications and The Walt Disney Company.

Virgin Media also announced that Mark Schweitzer, the company's chief commercial officer, has agreed to extend his contract with the company that was scheduled to end on March 31, 2010. He will remain in the United Kingdom to carry out certain special projects and to provide transitional support to Barron. The extension, through June 30, continues his compensation and benefits on their existing terms.

The company said Paul Buttery will become its chief customer and networks officer, effective January 4, 2010, with expanded responsibility for customer and operations activities. Buttery will assume some of Barron's responsibilities on the operations side and retain responsibility for the company's access and networks activities.

VMED closed Friday's regular trading at $16.74.
