Explosives Seized, 25 Arrested In Massive Security Sweep In Baghdad Under Bomb Threat

Baghdad 011210

Iraqi security forces on Tuesday confiscated a large quantity of explosives and arrested 25 people in a massive search in Baghdad after the city was placed under red alert on getting information suggesting a car-bombing plot by terrorists.

State television reported that the hours-long sweep returned up to 200 kilograms of TNT, an equal amount of C4, 250 liters of ammonium nitrate and 60 mortar shells.

Those arrested were suspected of plotting attacks on 'sensitive government buildings' in the capital. The police combed off the entire city for the suspected car bomb.

Intense security measures shut down large areas of Baghdad, preventing thousands from getting to work or school and setting residents on high-tension, leading to widespread rumors that Sunni military officers had attempted a coup.

Iraqi government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh convened a press conference to deny the rumor, thus alleviating tension.

The situation in the Iraqi capital Tuesday morning was equal to a curfew, as most areas in Baghdad were blocked, reports said.

Security forces searched vehicles and homes, and helicopters hovered over the city.
