At least eight police officers and two civilians have been killed on Friday, in a suicide attack in the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo, said the Sri Lankan the army.

The suicide bomber rammed his motorcycle packed with explosives into a police bus near a five-star hotel in the central district of Colombo, reported the BBC.

Three women police constables were among those killed in the suicide attack, which also injured 90 others, said Army spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara.

Though no one has claimed responsibility for the attack yet, Sri Lankan officials blamed the rebel Tamil Tigers for the suicide bombing.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa condemned the attack and accused the Tamil Tigers of "cowardice and brutality".

Fighting between the Sri Lankan military and Tamil Tiger rebels intensified after the breakdown of a six-year ceasefire treaty in January.

It is estimated that more than 70,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in the country's civil war after the Tamil Tiger rebels launched an armed rebellion in 1983, demanding an independent state for the Tamil minority in the island country's north and east regions.
