An Israeli businessman, who was kidnapped in the west African country of Ghana last week, has escaped from his captors, said officials on Thursday.

While Ghanaian officials said that the Israeli escaped during a police raid at the hotel where he was held, Israeli media reported that he simply escaped from his captors in a taxi and then called the police.

Israeli Foreign Ministry officials said the man is unharmed and has been reunited with family members.

He was kidnapped last Sunday and his abductors then contacted his relatives in Israel to demand a ransom of $300,000, which they later reduced to $30,000.

Though kidnapping for ransom is common in neighboring Nigeria, they are rare in Ghana, which is one of the region's few politically stable countries with a reasonable economic growth.
