Monday, Mexican airport operator Grupo Aeroportuario del Centro Norte, S.A.B. de C.V., known as OMA, (OMAB) reported terminal passenger traffic at 13 airports for the month of August.
The company said that total passenger traffic decreased 12.9% in August to 1.03 million from last year's 1.18 million. Total passenger traffic volumes decreased at a slower rate in August than in any prior month of the year, mainly due to the performance of domestic traffic, OMA noted.
Domestic traffic was down 11% to 896 thousand from 1.01 million in the prior-year month. According to the company, the performance of VivaAerobus, Grupo Aeromexico, Aeromar, and Grupo Mexicana benefited domestic traffic. The Culiacan, Durango, and Mazatlan airports reported traffic growth of 15.7%, 23.2%, and 2.6% respectively. However, the overall volume of domestic traffic was affected by the temporary suspension of operations of Aviacsa and the departure from the markets of Alma, Aladia and Avolar. The Monterrey, Acapulco, and Ciudad Juarez airports had the largest traffic reductions, OMA noted.
International traffic reached 132.7 thousand, a decline of 24.1% from 174.8 thousand in August 2008. The principal factors in the reduction of international passengers were the cancellation of routes by Mexicana and Aeromexico, the suspension of Aviacsa, the departure of Delta from most of OMA's airports, and a reduction in frequencies by Continental. Monterrey and the tourist destination airports were the most affected, the company stated.
OMAB closed Friday's trading at $11.94, up $0.48, on a volume of 16,853 shares.
