GE Fanuc Teams With Cavium Networks To Develop Multicore Military Solutions - Update

GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms, a GE Enterprise Solutions (GE) unit, Tuesday said it along with Cavium Networks has initiated efforts to facilitate high-performance compute technology using low power multicore processor architectures in military/aerospace applications.

Multicore processing is an architecture in which two or more independent processor chips, referred to as cores, works simultaneously as one system, augmenting performance, while minimizing power and heat consumption. The design also enables users to do more task at same time, however, requiring multi-threaded software and operating system.

The collaboration utilizing GE Fanuc's strength in the military/aerospace industry and low power multicore solutions and Cavium Networks' know-how in embedded multicore processors are expected to lead to the development of new solutions designed for military/aerospace applications, based on Cavium Networks' OCTEON family of multi-Core processors.

YJ Kim, Senior Director of Networking Communications Division at Cavium Networks said, "The OCTEON II family of processors with up to 32 cores each running at up to 1.5GHz coupled with the military/aerospace expertise of GE Fanuc will bring wire-speed deep packet inspection, network intelligence and security to specialized military applications."

Applications of the Cavium OCTEON processor-based solutions would include deep packet inspection, network monitoring, intrusion detection, firewalling and other intelligent networking applications that would interest military customers.

OCTEON multicore processors are indicated with a scalable range from one to 32 cnMIPS cores on a single chip along with the most advanced networking, security and application hardware acceleration.

GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms currently utilizes Cavium Networks' multicore processors in solutions designed for the telecommunications industry.

GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms is a a high-performance technology company, a joint venture between General Electric Co. and FANUC Ltd. of Japan.

GE is currently trading at $17.10, up $0.34 or 2.05%, on a volume of 42.33 million shares.
