Sunoco Inc. (SUN) reported a third-quarter net loss attributable to Sunoco shareholders of $312 million or $2.67 per share, compared to net income of $549 million or $4.70 per share for the third quarter of 2008.
Excluding special items, Sunoco had a loss for the 2009 third quarter of $34 million or 0.29 per share, compared to net income of $559 million or $4.78 per share in the year ago quarter.
Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected the company to report a loss of $0.10 per share. Analysts' estimates typically exclude special items.
Revenues for the quarter were $8.70 billion, compared to $15.15 billion in the prior year quarter. Two analysts had consensus revenue estimate of $7.83 billion for the quarter.
