Croatian police said Tuesday they had arrested two Slovaks as the latter tried to smuggle seven Afghans and one Pakistani into the country from neighboring Serbia.
The Slovaks, traveling by a van, were halted at the border check-post of Ilok in eastern Croatia, and following searches, the police found the would-be immigrants or transients, aged between 13 and 17, hidden in roof space designed for storing luggage.
They were sent to an immigration-holding center in eastern Croatia, and the two Slovaks were arrested.
Croatia is one of the main transit countries for illegal immigrants and/or transients, especially from Pakistan and Afghanistan, trying to reach Europe.
