Delta Air Lines November Traffic Down 7.1% - Update

Friday, Delta Air Lines (DAL) reported a decrease in traffic for the month of November on a decline in capacity.

According to the company, System traffic in November, including both Delta and Northwest operations, decreased by 7.1% to 13.57 billion revenue passenger miles or RPMs from 14.61 billion RPMs in November 2008 on an 8.4% decrease in capacity. System available seat miles or ASMs declined to 17.05 billion ASMs from 18.62 billion ASMs in November 2008. System load factor increased 1.1 points to 79.6% from 78.5% year-ago.

Domestic traffic decreased 4.6% year-over-year to 8.63 billion RPMs from 9.04 billion RPMs on a 4.2% decrease in capacity. Domestic load factor decreased 0.3 points to 79.8% from 80.1% in November 2008.

International traffic decreased by 11.2% year-over-year to 4.94 billion RPMs from 5.56 billion RPMs on a 14.9% decrease in capacity. International load factor increased by 3.3 points to 79.2% from 75.9% year-ago.

Total number of passengers who boarded the airline declined by 5.3% to 12.16 million from 12.84 million in November 2008.

System cargo ton miles increased by 7.9% to 225.75 million from 209.18 million year-ago.

Year-to-date, Delta's system traffic declined by 6.7% to 174.26 billion RPMs from 186.86 billion RPMs in the year-ago period. The system capacity declined by 6.3% to 212.22 billion ASMs from 226.47 billion ASMs year-ago. Year-to-date system load factor declined by 0.4 points to 82.1% from 82.5% in the year-ago period.

The company said that year-to-date, the number of passengers who boarded the airline fell by 6.1% to 148.55 million from 158.22 million year-ago.

DAL is currently trading on the New York Stock Exchange at $9.70, up $0.32 or 3.41%.
