Media reported on Sunday that Dutch car maker Spyker has submitted a new offer to buy Saab, the Swedish brand of General Motors Co. (MTLQQ.PK). On Friday, the once mighty U.S. car maker reported that it would wind down its Saab unit as the deal to sell it to Spyker had collapsed as a result of unsolvable issues arose during talks.
However, in the new offer Spyker is said to have included proposals to overcome the obstacles standing in the way of the agreement.
Spyker emerged as a potential buyer for Saab after Swedish company Koenigsegg Group withdrawn its bid in November due to the difficulty in getting financial assistance.
Saab employs about 3,400 people worldwide and most of them are in Sweden. The closure will affect all these employees and thousands of others indirectly.
As part of its reorganisation process, GM is trying to transform itself into a more leaner company by selling non-core brands and focusing on a few winning ones.
GM has only limited time to respond to the new offer from Spyker as it is slated to expire on Monday.
MTLQQ on Friday closed at $0.5360, down $0.0150 or 2.72% on a volume of 4.10 million shares.
