In the wake of a fresh political turmoil in Nepal, the United States Wednesday urged the Maoists in the Himalayan nation to "work constructively" with other political parties to move the peace process forward and help draft the new constitution in time.
"We urge the Maoist to work constructively with the other parties to move the peace process forward," State Department spokesman Mark Toner said.
Noting that the United Communist Party Nepal (Maoist) has just ended a violent three-day nation-wide general strike, Toner said these strikes do little to build consensus in the country.
This is the first public statement from the U.S. on the situation in Nepal after threats by the former rebels to paralyze the Himalayan nation with an indefinite strike from January 24 in protest against the government.
