Eli Lilly Swings To Q4 Profit; Backs FY10 EPS View - Quick Facts

Eli Lilly Co. (LLY) said its fourth-quarter reported net income stood at $915.4 million or $0.83 per share versus a loss of $3.63 billion or $3.31 per share in the comparable period.

Pro forma non-GAAP net income for the period declined to $999.4 million or $0.91 per share from $1.12 billion or $1.02 per share last year. On average, 18 analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected earnings per share of $0.92 for the quarter. Analysts' estimate typically excludes one-time items.

In the fourth quarter of 2009, worldwide total revenue was $5.93 billion, an increase of 14% compared with $5.20 billion in the fourth quarter of 2008. Pro forma total revenue increased 13% to $5.93 billion from $5.26 billion a year earlier. Thirteen analysts estimated revenues of $5.66 billion for the quarter.

Excluding the potential impact of health care reform in the U.S., the company still anticipates 2010 earnings per share of $4.65 - $4.85 on both a reported and a non-GAAP basis. Twenty analysts estimate fiscal 2010 earnings per share of $4.73.
