Ecuador and Colombia have agreed to resume full diplomatic relations that were cut off nearly two years ago.
A decision to this effect was taken during a meeting between Colombian President Alvaro Uribe and his Ecuadorian counterpart Rafael Correa on the sidelines of a meeting of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) Tuesday.
It was Uribe's first visit to Ecuador after a Colombian military aircraft raided a camp used by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) on the Ecuadorian territory in March 2008.
Nineteen FARC guerrillas and one Colombian soldier were killed in the attack.
Provoked by the incursion, Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa decided to snap all diplomatic contacts with the neighboring nation.
He ordered the Ecuadorean embassy in Colombia to close and expelled the Colombian ambassador.
However, after three months, Correa and Uribe agreed to restore diplomatic relations at the level of Chargé d'Affaires.
Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino said it would open an embassy in Colombian capital Bogota shortly.
