A new Rasmussen Reports survey released Thursday showed Republican Mike Castle with a big lead over Democrat Chris Coons in the race for U.S. Senate in Delaware.
The poll showed Castle with a 53% to 32% lead over Coons, with 8% preferring someone else and 8% undecided.
In addition, the surveyed showed that 23% of Delaware voters have a very favorable view of Castle. Coons, meanwhile, has 9% viewing him very favorably, with another 22% saying they don't know enough about him to form an opinion.
Ted Kaufman was appointed by the governor to fill Vice President Joe Biden's seat after Biden left the Senate after being elected vice president. Kaufman has announced that he is not seeking a full Senate term and will not run in November.
Democrats had been hoping that Biden's son, state Attorney General Beau Biden, would run for his father's former seat, especially since polls showed him in a close race with Castle.
However, Biden surprised Democrats with his decision to not run, leaving them without a strong candidate.
