The Food and Drug Administration is investigating the ongoing national salmonella outbreak involving black pepper and is looking at possibly recalling more products.
The FDA, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service are working with the Rhode Island Department of Health and other states in the investigation of an outbreak of Salmonella Montevideo infections associated with sausage products, including salami.
According to reports, the CDC said 230 people have been infected with a matching strain of Salmonella Montevideo in at least 44 states and the District of Columbia.
About 25 percent of the victims have been hospitalized, although no deaths have been reported.
