National Review Calls For Gingrich To Drop Out Of GOP Race

Conservative magazine National Review criticized Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich in an editorial on Monday, calling for the former House Speaker to drop out of the GOP primary contest.

National Review questioned Gingrich's reasons for remaining in the race, noting that it was not clear whether he "remains in the race because he still believes he could become president next year or because he wants to avenge his wounded pride; an ambiguity that suggests the problem with him as a leader."

The editorial also noted that, after a brief upswing in popularity, Gingrich is now behind Rick Santorum in the polls and added that "it would be a grave mistake for the party to make someone with such poor judgment and persistent unpopularity its presidential nominee."

Gingrich has come under criticism from the publication in the past, most recently being criticized for "his impulsiveness, his grandiosity, his weakness for half-baked (and not especially conservative) ideas" in a December editorial.

Gingrich's representatives have not commented on the matter.
