Republican Senator Scott Brown, R-Mass., has surged ahead of Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren in the upcoming Massachusetts Senate race, according to the latest poll by Suffolk University/7 News.
The poll showed that 49 percent of Massachusetts voters support Brown, while 40 percent support Warren, who helped the Obama administration establish the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and currently serves as a Harvard Law School professor.
The latest results represent a significant shift from December's UMass Lowell/Boston Herald poll, in which Warren led by 7 points, and a WBUR poll from early February, in which Warren led by 3 points.
"Scott Brown's popularity and appeal are overpowering the efforts of Elizabeth Warren, who struggles to introduce herself to the larger pool of Massachusetts voters," said David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center in Boston. "Warren's support does not have traction among independents."
The poll showed that Brown also has significant leads over two other potential Democratic candidates, topping Marisa DeFranco 55 percent to 22 percent and Jim King 57 percent to 21 percent.
Brown benefits from a 52 percent favorable rating, while Warren has a 35 percent favorable rating and a 28 percent unfavorable rating.
The survey of 600 Massachusetts registered voters was conducted February 11th through 15th and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
