The report showed that existing home sales rose 4.3 percent to an annual rate of 4.57 million in January from a downwardly revised 4.38 million-unit pace in December.
Economists had expected existing home sales to increase by about 1.1 percent to an annual rate of 4.66 million from the 4.61 million that had been reported for the previous month.
