Washington Whimsy - Gun Racks, Gas Prices And Gingrich

Republican Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich sought to fire up supporters in Georgia last week by pledging to lower gas prices by drilling anywhere in America that oil might be found.

To highlight the importance of his point, Gingrich claimed the matter was urgent for conservatives because it's impossible to put a gun rack in the back of the Chevrolet hybrid-electric car, the Volt.

"Here's my point to folks," Gingrich said in remarks aimed at mocking President Barack Obama's proposed subsidies for renewable energy. "You can't put a gun rack in a Volt."

Gingrich went on to say that the notion of reducing subsidies for hybrid vehicles drives liberals crazy because "How dare we go out and drive vehicles bigger than their bicycles?"

Those comments, however, didn't sit well with one Volt (and presumably gun) owner, YouTube user "jtmcdole."

Having taken Gingrich's comments as something of a challenge "jtmcdole" posted a video displaying the fact that, yes, one can install a gun rack in the back of a Chevy Volt.

"As you can see," he said, "you can put a gun rack in the back of a Volt."

One presumes that Ford's hybrid SUV, the Escape, is also roomy enough to fit a gun rack (though one of the most prominent Washington owners of such a vehicle, former White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, could not be reached for comment as to whether he'd ever tried to install one).

But the jury remains out as to whether the signature Toyota Prius, Honda Insight or the GMC Sierra hybrid pickup truck will prove roomy enough to accommodate the firepower their owners might wish to transport.
