Legendary Associated Press photographer Horst Faas died at age 79 on Thursday in Munich, Germany, according to his daughter. Faas suffered for years from health problems and paralysis from waist down.
German-born Faas is a two-time Pulitzer prize winner, touting the high award in years 1965 and 1972 for his combat images of Vietnam and Bangladesh. Faas covered the Vietnam war for the Associated Press and served as its Saigon photo chief during the most tumultuous times of the conflict. Moreover, Faas was often found on assignment with soldiers in the thick of warzone in South Vietnam and was even wounded while on job in 1967.
Faas often set standards for war reporting with his use of a camera as he also took time to train and mentor young Vietnamese photographers.
"Horst was one of the great talents of our age, a brave photographer and a courageous editor who brought forth some of the most searing images of this century," said AP Executive Editor Kathleen Carroll. "He was a stupendous colleague and a warm and generous friend."
