Malta HICP Inflation Rises To 16-Month High

Malta's EU harmonized inflation accentuated to the highest level in sixteen months in April, data released by the National Statistics Office showed Wednesday.

The harmonized index of consumer prices (HICP) increased 3.8 percent year-on-year in April, markedly faster than the 2.6 percent rise recorded in March. The latest growth was the biggest since December 2010, when prices moved up 4 percent.

Food and non-alcoholic beverages prices rose 5.6 percent annually, while clothing and footwear prices decreased 4.1 percent during the month. There was a 0.2 percent annual increase in housing costs and utility prices, and a 7.8 percent growth in transportation costs.

Month-on-month, consumer prices increased 3.4 percent in April, following the previous month's 1.5 percent gain.
