Dark Chocolate Could Lead To Lower Heart Attack Risk

Eating a small amount of dark chocolate could help ward off heart incidents from those who are predisposed to them, a new study by researchers at Monash University in Australia suggests. The study was published this weekend in the journal BMJ.

A research team made mathematical projections of possible health benefits of dark chocolate for those with high heart attack risk. Lead researcher Christopher M. Reid and his team calculated if 10,000 people consumed the recommended dosage of 3.5 ounces of dark chocolate a day for ten years, it could help avoid a total of 70 non-fatal and 15 fatal heart attacks.

"Dark chocolate may be a pleasant and effective way of delivering important dietary components that can provide health benefits to the ever increasing numbers of people at increased risk of cardiovascular disease," Reid told WebMD.com.
