Afghan and coalition security forces killed Taliban leader Mir Jan Lala during a security operation in Helmand province on Monday.
Mir Jan Lala was responsible for providing intelligence to Taliban senior leadership for planning attacks against Afghan and coalition forces, NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) Joint Command said in an operational update Tuesday.
Separately, Afghan and coalition forces detained an insurgent during a security operation in search of a Haqqani senior leader in Paktiya province on Tuesday. During the operation, the security force also seized multiple firearms.
An ISAF patrol seized nearly 600 kilograms of homemade explosives and ammonium nitrate, along with improvised explosive device initiators and components, during a joint air and ground patrol in Zabul province Sunday. The patrol destroyed all cache items at the location.
