India's Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals Inc. is conducting a voluntary recall of Atorvastatin calcium tablets, which are the generic version of Pfizer Inc.'s (PFE) cholesterol-lowering drug Lipitor, due to presence of small glass particles approximately less than 1mm in size.
Ranbaxy said it is conducting this recall in connection with its 10mg 20mg and 40mg dosage strengths, packaged in 90's and 500 count bottles and with respect to certain select lot numbers. The recall does not affect the 80mg strength.
"Ranbaxy is proactively recalling the drug product lots out of an abundance of caution, and in keeping the safety of our customers in mind", according to the company's statement.
Ranbaxy gained the U.S. FDA approval to make the first generic version of Lipitor in November 2011. In 2010, Pfizer itself has recalled certain lots of Lipitor in response to complaints of uncharacteristic odor. Pfizer's Lipitor sales for the nine-month period in 2012 declined 56 percent.
