Polish Inflation Slows More Than Expected In March

Poland's annual inflation weakened more than economists expected in the month of March, latest data showed Monday.

Inflation as per the consumer price index slowed to 1 percent in in March from 1.3 percent in February, the Central Statistical Office said. Economists had forecast a deceleration to 1.1 percent.

Prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages gained 1.5 percent year-on-year, and housing costs moved up 1.9 percent. Meanwhile, there was a 5.2 percent fall in clothing and footwear prices, and a 0.5 percent decrease in transportation expenses.

Month-on-month, the consumer price index edged up 0.2 percent in March, after staying unchanged in the previous month. The monthly growth was forecast to be 0.3 percent.

In a separate report, the central bank said that Poland's current account deficit narrowed notably to EUR854 million in February from EUR1.69 billion in January. The shortfall was forecast to drop to EUR1.53 billion.

The goods trade account showed a surplus of EUR602 million in February, after recording a deficit of EUR8 million in January. The surplus in the services account increased to EUR343 million from EUR252 million.

The balance in the income account was a deficit of EUR1.41 billion, down from January's EUR1.64 billion shortfall. The current transfers deficit widened to EUR390 million from EUR294 million.
