The number of unemployed persons in Germany increased by 4,000 to around 2.94 million in April from the prior month, the Federal Labor Agency said Tuesday. Economists had forecast unemployment to rise by 2,000.
The unemployment rate remained unchanged at seasonally adjusted 6.9 percent in April. The rate came in line with economists' expectations.
The Federal Statistical Office earlier in the day said that for the month month of March, Germany's unemployment rate stayed steady at 5.4 percent on an adjusted basis. The unadjusted rate slipped to 5.6 percent from 6 percent in February.
The number of unemployed fell 6.7 percent month-on-month to 2.37 million in March. Employment, meanwhile, rose 0.4 percent to 39.99 million.
